Surely, everyone wants their bathroom to always look clean. Unfortunately, limescale, yellow stains and unsightly streaks in the bathtub and sink make this difficult. Learn some foolproof ways to deal with it.

Causes of stains in the bathroom

There are really many reasons for the formation of stains in the bathroom. The most common cause of stains on the bathtub and the sink is so-called hard water. It contains a lot of calcium, which is deposited on the surface in the form of stains. To avoid this, you can, for example, invest in a bath filter or a water softener. Another, rather trivial, cause is soap scum – soap particles are deposited on the washbasin or bathtub, and especially on the faucets, creating ugly stains. The way you clean your surfaces is also important. By using hard cleaning materials and scrubbing hard, you create micro scratches that will make the dirt and residue appear even faster

Home remedies for stains

Vinegar

Your greatest ally in the fight for a beautiful bathroom is undoubtedly vinegar. This is because it has many disinfecting and cleaning properties, and most importantly, it is able to dissolve calcium. There are several methods you can try to get your bathtub and sink clean and shiny. First, you can spray vinegar topically on the spots that are covered in stains and then wipe them off with a sponge. If that doesn’t work, maybe put a vinegar-soaked cloth on the surface of the tub or sink and let it sit for about 10-15 minutes, then rinse with water. You can also pour boiling water with vinegar into the tub (after plugging the stopper) and leave it as long as you can. Vinegar will also work great for daily cleaning of sink faucets. It will make all the dirt disappear and the faucets themselves will shine like new.

Salt and turpentine

If you want your bathtub to be sparkling white and look like new, you can use a solution of salt and turpentine. It will make ugly yellow stains disappear from the tub and your bathroom will smell like a coniferous forest.

Lemon juice or citric acid

Yellow stains caused by dripping tap water can be removed with heated lemon juice or citric acid spilled on the damp surface. After an hour, you can rinse the surface with warm water and wipe it dry. Wiping the surface with lemon peel is also a good solution.

Buttermilk

If your bathtub or shower tray is made of enamel, a great cleaning product is buttermilk. For example, you can wash the tarnished walls by rubbing them with buttermilk and salt and a small amount of vinegar, then rinse with plenty of warm water. This is because buttermilk makes enamel surfaces shine again. Alternatively, after washing, you can rub them with buttermilk alone and then rinse them thoroughly after at least an hour.

Waterproofing

To prevent new stains and smudges, you can also waterproof your sink or basin at home. For this you need cooking oil, coconut butter or mineral oil. First, clean the surface thoroughly and dry it completely and soak a cloth in the impregnation. Rub in the oil gently and let it coat for about 20 minutes. Then wipe the sink or basin with a dry cloth and enjoy the shine.
